MASTER THE ART OF SELF-DISCIPLINE
Self-discipline is that bridge that links our desires to rewards, it is the art of self-control.
Donald trump in his classic book Never give up was asked the important characteristic required of a good leader and discipline was his succinct reply.
Excellence is a habit and the successful differ because of their habits, successful people are deemed lucky because they are known for doing the needful.
All goals set are easily achieved when we stick to the plans needed to achieve them and this requires good personal ethics strengthened by self-discipline.
Since accomplishing our goals makes us feel good about ourselves, self-discipline in essence is a means to having a super self-image, here are a few ways to develop and strengthen our personal willpower.
1. Taking a bold step: Our present results are consequences of previous actions, if such results are not congruent with our wishes, there arises a need to change present actions by eating the frog. A bold step has to be taken in steering our ships to the preferred direction, displeasure against unpleasant results serves as a motivation and coming to a decision to do things differently exercises our willpower and strengthens our muscles of self-control.
2. Motivations and Mentorships: A cursory look at the successful people we admire shows a quality prevalent in them, confidence! a direct reward of self-ownership and self-control. Most of them didn’t just start out the way they are today and have experienced moments of disenchantment, angst and self-doubt. We can improve ourselves by reading books authored by them, listening to podcasts produced by them and personally connecting with them. Doing all this is a sure way to enhance our personal growth and discipline.
3. Taking control of our lives: Developing self-discipline is a gradual process that envelops taking responsibility of our personal life. The easiest way out when faced with unimpressive circumstances might be to blame everything and that does not make things better. Taking responsibility of circumstances not only puts us in a place of personal power but also sharpens our willpower.
4. Doing new things: Coming out of our comfort zones by doing new things help develop self-discipline, it subconsciously opens us up to new sides we were not privy to. This innate discovery shows us our unlimited capabilities which further enhances our self-image and serves as an impetus that drives us towards achieving set goals. Taking public speaking courses for example imbibes a sense of personal responsibility that enhances self-discipline.
5. Starting Now: Writers get inspirations to write when they write, footballers play football better when they play football, salesmen make the best sales when they sell, leaders lead well when they are in the act of leading, therefore the key to self-discipline is to begin to do the hard things right away, bit by bit. We all know what we all want, we possibly know what to do to get what we want, what keeps us back ranges from laziness to double-mindedness, the answer is not far-fetched- START NOW! A little leaven leavens the whole lump.
6. Celebrate yourself and your wins: We accomplish little when we have a poor image of ourselves but we accomplish unlimited things when we have a superb self-esteem. At times, disappointment creeps in when we experience failures, we needn’t be hard on ourselves at such moments because our failures empowers us for success by keeping us more informed. When we hit daily, monthly or annual target goals, we should celebrate those wins with our friends and families, make toasts and celebrate the dividends of working hard.
